Researchers Collected Real-Time Data on E-cigarette Use for Future Reference

Perhaps, the most damning argument ever thrown against vaping is the purported presence of formaldehyde in the aerosol mist produced by mods. Fortunately for us, more experienced and knowledgeable vapers, like Matt of Suck My Mod on YouTube, quickly refuted this ridiculous "finding" from a controversial research study.

As Matt pointed out in his video, formaldehyde could have been formed only when the heated coil was fired at 5 volts (which has a 12-watt mod setting) the aerosol produced had an estimated temperature of 600 degrees Celsius, which is equivalent to 1,112 degrees Fahrenheit. The auto-ignition temperature for charcoal to burn without an external flame is around 660 degrees Fahrenheit. Obviously, such temperature settings used by the researchers were unrealistic and would likely burn your face off if you tried to replicate it.

In an effort to address these flawed assumptions on the part of the scientific community, a couple of researchers have established real-time measurements of e-cigarette use for future research purposes.

Data from 185 vapers using Smokio were gathered for 116 days. The research team distributed vaping kits that used a lithium-ion battery with 3.7-volt nominal value and a capacity of 650 to 900 mAh. The kit also included glass clearomizers with dual coil setup with an impedance of less than 2.0 ohms each, and a capacity of at least 1.5 ml e-juice.

Dubbed as the "1 Million Puffs" study, it yielded the following results:
During the first 60-day of use, the rate of isolated puff increased from 8.14% to 11.25% (p<0.001) and the mean number of puffs by series decreased from 6.78±8.13 to 4.66±5.07 (p<0.001). During the same 60 days of use, the number of puffs/day decreased from 209 to 127 and the puffs are less often isolated (9.28%).

This result serves as additional supporting evidence to the initial findings of previous studies concerning the effectiveness of e-cigarette use in reducing nicotine intake and encouraging smokers to quit.

Vaping Not Allowed on Planes, Trains and Cars

The International Civil Aviation Organizxation (ICAO) has already advised airline passengers not to put their mods, cartomizers and other materials used in vaping inside their checked baggage. This rule was implemented after reports of batteries and chargers exploding inside the passenger's luggage.

Worldwide Ban of Vapor Devices in Checked Baggage

ICAO, which sets guidelines and airline safety standards for 191 member states, made the decision based on the potential fire hazard of exploding batteries.

Olumuyiwa Benard Aliu, president of the ICAO Council is quoted saying "Several incidents have been reported involving e-cigarette heating elements being accidentally activated and resulting in fires in checked baggage."

And, airlines aren't the only ones banning vaping in their planes. In the United Kingdom, vaping and vaping materials are not allowed in trains and stations that are part of the Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) franchise.

Train operator Southern is to ban the use of electronic cigarettes and other electronic vaping devices from its trains and stations as of next month.

The company, which runs services in Hastings, Bexhill, Rye and Eastbourne, becomes part of the Govia Thameslink Railway franchise in July and says the ban falls in line with GTR policy.

A spokesperson for Southern said: "From Sunday July 26, electronic cigarettes and other electronic 'vaping' devices will no longer be permitted on Southern and Gatwick Express trains and at Southern stations."

However, vapers are free to bring their vaping gear inside their handbags or carry-alls.

It should be pointed out that the new ban does not prevent vapers from transporting their vaping products, e-liquids and accessories. The ICAO is merely prohibiting vapers from checking them into their luggage. It requires passengers to carry them onboard in the cabin so that the device can easily be accessed in the event that problems were to occur. The new regulation will also prohibit a passenger from charging their vaping device in flight and also bans its use while in the cabin.

It's also ill-advised for vapers to blow clouds of vapor inside the plane or while they're in the toilet. There's a possibility that other passengers, flight attendants, and pilots will misinterpret what you're doing in the can and think there's a fire inside the plane.

Meanwhile, vaping is not allowed in private vehicles when there are minors riding with adults. Likewise, vaping is prohibited on Greyhound buses.
